If you are interested in upgrading your iPhone 4 or 4S without spending a huge amount of money, look no further than the iPhone 5 mod kit. It may sound silly but a China based website, iPhone5mod.com, has indeed put up that offer, however, the offer may expire very soon. The website is quoted as saying;
“This iPhone 5 conversion mod kit converts your iPhone 4 /4S to look just like the iPhone 5! (assuming that the iPhone 5 leaks are real…) ! When we first saw the leaked iPhone 5 photo from various tech sites, we were all anxious to try out! We thought that the easiest and fastest way out is to convert our iPhone 4 / 4S to look just like iPhone 5.”
How Close is the iPhone 5 Mod Kit to Reality?
It is fair to say that the creators of this kit have been toying around with Apple as it is giving nothing away about the much anticipated iPhone 5. There were rumors flying around recently that Apple was using an aluminum-clad back-plate for iPhone 5. The modification kit package, therefore, includes a back panel, original glass lens cover and both Phillips-head and Pentalobe (Five-Point Star) screw drivers. There is no guarantee that the package will contain these items as the kit is only available online for $30 with free worldwide shipping. However, there is a 30 day return policy.
As it can be determined, the video gives no clue about how the kit is used to perform the conversion although it has caused a stir in some geek-circles.
Is Apple Angry Over the iPhone 5 Mod Kit?
A third party organization has already sent an e-mail on behalf of Apple to the website owners asking them to stop the sale and a couple of days back the creators of the mod kit posted on their site that:
“We are sorry to announce that we have received a warning letter from some company who so-called authorized by Apple asking us to pull down the iPhone 5 Mod. In order to prevent further troubles we will stop selling the iPhone 5 Mod within next 48 hours. Customers who have already ordered, we will still ship out your order on time and will only debit/capture your payment upon ship out. New customers who want to order, please order within the next 48 hours, we will process your order accordingly.”
Some may call it bullying of the creative Chinese by Apple but the response is understandable as the kit manufacturers are using the Apple logo and name after completing the modifications which is definitely an intolerable infringement.
