Nearly every piece of hardware in our smartphones has continuously improved in performance and has been reduced in size over the years except for the one critical element – battery. It all comes down to the battery capacity when the features and specifications of a smartphone are being decided. There is no use of having a hi-tech device in your pocket if it simply cannot supply you an adequate amount of running time. The final decision about the battery time rests with the smartphone developer but there are certain measures that we, the users can take to improve it.
Follow a Charging Routine:
The foremost step to take is to come up with a charging timetable that satisfies the workload on your phone. There are certain functions that you perform on a day-to-day basis with your phone resulting in fairly constant usage. Your battery will run out after similar periods of time and therefore you would have a good idea of when to put your phone on charge.
Terminate Unnecessary Apps and Features:
There would always be a fair number of irrelevant applications running in the background using up a fair chunk of your memory and battery life. It would be quite wise to kill those applications when you are running low on your phone’s battery. Those applications that are updating your current location constantly transmit and receive signals. These should be on the top of the list to terminate when out of battery. Make sure the flash photography feature is disabled before taking a picture as you might not be needing it during daytime or indoors.
Turn off Wifi and Bluetooth:
Wifi based applications have become a sheer necessity in life for a modern day smartphone user, however, there are times during a day where you could do without it. Turning off your Wifi during that time interval can save you considerable amount of battery health. Likewise, Bluetooth should only be turned on when you want a task or an application to use it.
Lower Display Brightness:
A common practice with your laptops is that you lower their display brightness when running low on battery so why not apply the same technique to your phone. If you know that you won’t be able to charge anytime soon, it would be prudent to lower the brightness of your display.
Power Management Apps:
There are applications that monitor and display the resources your phone is using but beware that these apps may tinker with your OS. The apps vary according to the different OS; iPhone users can use iStat to display this information. Mango is a suitable option for Mobile Windows users as it has a feature for battery saving. Android users, as expected, are spoilt for choice.
Excessive Heat and Temperature:
Batteries function optimally in a specific range of temperature – close to room temperature that is. Using them for long periods in conditions outside the specified temperature range harm the batteries thus making them offer lesser run-times.
Get A New Battery Rather than Cursing the Old one!
If you are a proactive user, you would be monitoring your battery times on a regular basis. Keep aware of the trend in time your battery is offering. There is no coming back for a battery; once its life has depleted, it cannot be retrieved. When your battery has sufficiently deteriorated, it is best to get a replacement than cursing it once it hangs you out to dry!
